Best ESP for WiFi signal strength

Hi All, I have an 2 x ESP32 DEVKIT V1 - DOIT boards. I built a really simple Temp & Humidity sensor and OLED readout linked by WiFi using Client/Server mode. I am getting really bad transmission distances of 4 to 5 meters and no more. Is there any way to improve this? Are there other ESP boards that have better transmission distances? Is there anything I can do to improve the distance I am getting with software settings or hardware (added/better antenna). One board is USB powered and the other by a battery bank.

Do you have a router or other device also using WIFI that is nearby?

Maybe you need an ESP module with an external antenna.

Yes and No, I took both the client and server away from my 2 WiFi extenders to make sure there is no interference. Unfortunately there is WiFi from neighbors but not very strong signals.
