I think 24 AWG is best for solderless breadboards.
Just cut the wire clean and straight as crummy cutters make a little hook at the end like and that will catch, kink, and make you cuss.
It helps to have a pair of needle-nose ("noodle-knees") pliers to start the wire in with.
(Yes, 26 is "easy", too easy.)
