Hi, Was laying in bed last night thinking about getting a bike turbo trainer.
Was thinking if i got some device to send wheel rotation/speed and maybe go some servo motor to control the resistance i could create some zwift type clone.
Would be great to get me motivated to cycle more while i'm working from home and the UK weather is awful.
Have a think too about how much power you will produce and what sort of brake you will need to absorb it - it’s the mechanics that will be hard , design & build that first
I would recommend rollers over bolt-in (or your frame and outdoor game will suffer). You will want proficiency before TTs, or the tele will have a wheel in through its tube/diode. For long duration riding, stream any number of bicycle POV from YouTube, and BAM! You're Zwift KOH (king of house). Be sure to litter the floor and "paper" the frame with towels to reduce the salt, sweat and grease that WILL pour from your body, even with robust ventilation. Clean all surfaces ASAP or sooner, or your frame, floor and family relations will suffer. You will need elbow (and crash) room, and an understanding (or hard-of-hearing) significant other, but it is training, and you are an arm's length from a post-ride Boddingtons.
If you can't get meaningful information from your speed thing, a magnet glued to a roller can be sensed up by a Hall effect board and analy(s)ed by code running on an Arduino.
Rockbros has a foldable, size-adjustable and resistance-adjustable roller. US$150.
