Since the battery works, it cannot be the battery.. . My guess is a loose contact.

Not fully relevant as current gain drops near saturation. But the bc 547A would not get even near saturation...
Yes I do use the battery to feed the base of the transistors and the vcc is from the battery as well.
One 1.5V battery???
It's an 18650. Li-Ion, 3.7V.
That is still very little as Vcc.
Two in series would be better.
