Black Backlight ? What the hell ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1602-LCD-Verdant-Characters-Black-Backlight-HD44780-New-/110762734152?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c9f93248

I was thinking of buying this LCD.

But then I saw the word "Black" backlight and I was like what ?!!

Is this just another way of saying they are too cheap to actually put an LED in it ?

Same here:

Is this a joke ?

I think that something's lost in translation.
It's a reverse image LCD, usually the characters are dark on a light background, but with this unit it's the opposite.
Reasonable?

Ooooooooooo
Thanks

And I thought they were capitalizing on the 'dark sucker' theory....

Don

I've never used those kind. Are they readable without back light at all?

I have here a DisplayTech 204A, 204A-GC-BC-3LP

Seen here: 204A-GC-BC-3LP Displaytech | Displaytech 204A-GC-BC-3LP Alphanumeric LCD Display, White on Black, 4 Rows by 20 Characters, Transflective | 532-6824 | RS Components

It's barely visible without the backlight on.

Thanks. I wonder what they are used for.
