Hey all. I'm a total noob to this (I know, sorry). So here's my idea for my first project- I want to build my own bluetooth interface to my car alarm/remote starter, with a corresponding app for my phone. I have background in electronics and software, but unfortunately not much in the way of direct serial communication. That's the bad news. The good news is the vehicle brain in question is already serial capable. So I guess my first major q is- can I wire up a bluetooth board alone in master mode to communicate directly with the alarm brain?
Need more specifics on the vehicle and the communication protocol
Well vehicle is irrelevant, it is an aftermarket alarm. I plan on using a Compustar CM5000 series brain. The vehicle in question currently has a CM3000 series system installed which is not serial capable, whereas the CM4000+ series are. It has an RS232 port, but I am unsure of the protocol used. I am in the process of obtaining one to experiment with.
get the datasheet or manual. You need the communication protocol. Just connecting a serial port is probably not going to get you anything.
Well unfortunately the manufacturer has been less than forthcoming with technical specs, due to (at least partially I'm sure) the fact that they offer a similar interface as what I'm trying to build, but that "upgrade" is over $200 for the unit itself and then ongoing service fees to keep it working. Hence my desire to build my own on the cheap.
Is there any way I could hook up the brain itself to some sort of serial port monitor to capture the communication?
