Board at null

need solve for--Board at null is not available

More context needed. What board, what IDE version, what were you trying to do. What is the full text of the error message? Was anything else shown?

sorry, im completely new at this. ok-board is UNO-R3--the IDE is 1.8.8, if that`s what your asking for, if

not please help me understand. Thank you so much--Greg

I was doing that very first blink program. went through and fixed coding errors as errors came up, just capitals and semicolons, until this --Board at null is not available-came up. And that was the whole error listed.

Please post your code.

Which OS?

Maybe, very maybe, there is no default com port selected. If so, IDE menu tools -> port and select the correct port.

Which port have you got selected in Tools/Port in the IDE ?

Im on Com5---that was the only one listed, and if im sending PMs , I did not know and i dont know how to reply otherwise, im just hitting the reply button at the bottom of the page

Don't panic, you're reacting on UKHeliBob's signature; has nothing to do with his post

Please enable the 'verbose output during upload' option in IDE menu file -> preferences.

Next try to upload.

When there is an error, there should be a button 'copy error message' just above the black output pane. Please use that to copy the error message and next paste it here.

ok, Sorry, but I dont know what the --Verbose-output--is, nor do I see it or a tab for it.

I tried to copy and paste the error message many times, but it will not let me do it, it wont even highlight.

However--the message I have in --orange--in the black panel at the bottom, is, exactly this.

Board at null is not available---and thats it.

sorry for all of this but im trying to do this to build of few things for, and with my grandson,

and im just not the computer / coding guy. I have wired 30 story buildings, but an electrician

does not a coder make. Thank you for any help you can give--Greg

is that port still listed ? what does it say in the bottom right of the IDE window ?

I have the same problem. I am unable to follow the instructions to connect to the unit to modify the Blink program. I get the message "Board at null is not available"
I suspect it is caused by a simple error on my part like a connection but as a beginner, the error message does not mean anything.
Help Please

When you see the "copy error messages" button, just click it; there will be nothing selected or whatever but it will be on the clipboard. Next paste in a reply here.

Did you try the other troubleshooting tips in this old thread? Did you check the board type and port in the IDE's Tools menu?

So I've joined the community (excitedly might I add) firstly to solve an immediate problem in running the basic tutorials in Arduino in regards to this exact problem, and furthermore to foster my motivation to study electrical engineering and computer science. The error that appeared was as he had stated Board is null and not available, displayed in an orange text. When I selected the option you'd said, it had disappeared. So my curiousity now that I've already wasted a minute of your time; is why would some people experience communication issues in settings upon opening the program and walking through the tutorial? Nothing to my knowledge after thumbing through it repeatedly Nothing* explained the verbose output during upload; so what does that mean?

You probably forgot to select the port of your board from the Arduino IDE's Tools > Port menu before uploading.

Hi world.!!>,

comment #5 was usefully for me,

thank you guys..!!

OK so. I'm trying my best to send this inquiry with an image, it requires a url. So I have to post this online to send it... whatever. The point is, when I go to tools "port" isn't in the dark font, but rather a grey font and nothing happens like the other text when I drag the cursor over it. so because of that I keep getting "Board at null is not available" error when I'm clicking Serial Monitor. Why might this be?

If Tools -> Port is greyed out, there is a good chance that your OS did not see the board.

Which OS?
2)
Which Arduino?
3)
What does Windows device manager (or the Linux/Mac equivalents) say when you connect the board?
