do i need capacitors for smoothing?
You always need capacitors to lower the impedance of the power supply when ever you make anything.
With that setup I would not use any reverse voltage protection, how can you get a reverse voltage from your switching regulator?
The capacitor values to use depend on a lot of factors, but a 0.1uF in parallel with a big one of 100uF or more is the way to go.
