Book on understanding shift registers

Hi,

I need a book that helps explain some of the stuff I see in Data sheets associated with Shift Registers and Microcontroller related at the physical layer. I can understand the code (that's no problem) but I just don't understand the Physical Layer stuff. Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject?

I am currently reading Physical computing

Which is AWESOME!! But I still need more help with the lower level stuff found in most data sheets (clock, latch, etc).
