Bootloader -F Override

Hello,
I made a custom PCB with an ATMEGA328 on it. However, when I try uploading the bootloader, it gives me this error, below. I think it's because this is a new ATMEGA328, and that if I override the check it should be fine. How would I do that, and what does "use -F to override" mean?
Thanks so much,
Kevin

Arduino: 1.8.13 (Windows 10), TD: 1.53, Board: "Arduino Uno"

avrdude: Yikes!  Invalid device signature.

Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override

         this check.

Error while burning bootloader.

Nevermind, just worked. For no apparent reason.

The -F override never works; that error message should absolutely not suggest it. It should suggest that you may have set the part to use an oscillator that is either not connected or not functioning, that the wrong part is selected, etc.

Telling it to ignore the check will just cause it to fail at the subsequent step or upload a binary that doesn't match the part, or fail in some other way because the part is defective and has somehow forgotten it's signature (very, very rarely, part signatures can get mangled somehow.
