Bootloader is OK, can't upload sketch

ISSUE: avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

Hello,

I have a problem uploading to a CLONE Arduino Board. The issue is that the programmer is not responding as the title implies. The board in question is ordered from AliExpress and it came in a starter kit. My friend ordered this one, I have another one that I borrowed him for his college classes. The trouble is, this one doesn't work (he said he messed around with bootloaders). My other board works.

I tried the following:

  • Burning a bootloader from Arduino IDE using 'Burn bootloader' option -> using an Arduino as a programmer
  • Burning a bootloader using Nick Gammon's sketches
  • Using Atmel's FLIP software to upload a bootloader to Atmega16U2 (communication chip)
  • I did the loopback test and it's working

This is the Arduino CLONE board in question

And this is the genuine Arduino board I used to program the CLONE (the other clone works, it's the same board)

This is how I hooked it up for a loopback test

And this is the result of the loopback test

This is the result (serial monitor) of uploading the board detector code on the genuine board

Atmega chip detector.

I wanted to upload verbose outputs too, but there is a 9000 character limit so the verbose outputs are in the attached txt files.

I don't know what else to try, so if you have a solution to this I'm open to it.
P.S. I disconnected everything when testing the board after new bootloader

Yep. Both burnings went successfully.

This is the wire-up, didn't want to post any schematics 'cause it's all explained on Nick's website and many other sites how to wire them up for ICSP.

Did you load any sketches using the ISP programmer after burning the bootloader?

Also, do you have two identical clone boards? If so, have you tried swapping the 328 chips between them to verify it isn't a problem with the board itself?

  1. No, I did that the first time and later found an answer online that LOADING A SKETCH USING ISP AFTER BURNING BOOTLOADER ERASES THE BOOTLOADER

  2. Not yet, kudos for the idea, I ordered another identical CLONE board yesterday and I'll try that when it arrives and will post the results here... (feel free to remind me in a month -- 2 weeks is the min. shipping time from China)

When you attempt to upload via serial, does the L led blink rapidly a few times?

DrAzzy:

Yes, both the LED L, and LED RX flash a couple of times. But the LED TX rarely ever flashes, and the RX LED flashes each time the programmer tries to establish a connection, but I guess since they don't manage to connect the TX LED doesn't flash? -> Because the board doesn't transmit anything?
