Bootloading SF SMD Simon

So I just finished my first surface mount project! (I got a new soldering station for christmas) I successfully (?) put together the Sparkfun surface mount Simon kit! I wanted to program it using the arduino IDE, and so I had to load the arduino bootloader, but this is where I've been having problems.

I'm using the arduino ISP setup, with a duemilanove. Here are the connections I made: With pin 1 on the Simon board's ISP header being the one with a line next to it, I have Pin 1 to D12 of the duemilanove 2 to 5v on the duemilanove 3 to 13 4 to 11 5 to 10 6 to GND

I have the arduino loaded with the ArduinoISP sketch and the leds mentioned in the sketch connected. The board selected is "ATmega328 on a breadboard (8 MHz internal clock)" from the arduino breadboard tutorial. from here.

Whenever I try to bootload the simon board, I get the message

avrdude: Yikes!  Invalid device signature.
         Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.

I've also tried connecting the corresponding pins of both boards' ISP headers, but I get a avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding Any ideas?

How can you tell which is pin 1 on the header? I can't see any alignment mark in the silkscreen.

For what it's worth, I can't see anything wrong with the way you've made the connections. They seem to match the description provided by Pololu for their USB programmer.

There is a line beside one of the pins. You see the outline of the header, but there is another line by pin 1.

I have also checked the continuity of each pin on the header with whereever it should be connected, 5v, gnd, and 4 pins of the uC, an so I am sure about the orientation of the header.

I have never tried bootloading a uC, so I feel like I may just be missing something software related, I think the hardware is correct.

Are you comfortable running AVRDUDE from the command-line?

Never done it, but I could try it.

At this point, there's no way to know if there's a software problem or a hardware problem. So, you'll need to "divide and conquer".

Hardware... Do you have a loose 168 or 328 processor and a breadboard? I ask because you can use them to ensure your "Arduino ISP" is working correctly. If it is working, then you'll know the problem is the Simon itself or the connection to the Simon.

Software... Start the Arduino IDE. Load or create a simple Sketch. While holding the Shift key, click the upload button. The AVRDUDE command line is displayed in the status window. Copy-and-paste the entire command line into a reply to this post. With that I'll be able to help you get a command shell setup to run AVRDUDE.

Oh, and what operating system are you using?

Alright I tried with another chip.

**It was a 328 already loaded with the Duemilanove bootloader. (it was the only thing I had.)

Got the same error:

If you open a command shell and try to run AVRDUDE, what happens?

Using a breadboard?

The second chip I tested was on a breadboard, using the circuit shown in the minimal configuration in the arduino breadboard tutorial.
