That sounds like a signature byte error where AVRDUDE found the target to be a 328 Vs a 328P chip. There are various workarounds if you do the research.
Turn on verbose output during upload and copy paste here the output to diagnose.
I have this exact same problem too.
After getting a new Arduino robot with an ATmega32U4 processor on it, while uploading, the sketch overwrote the bootloader and stuffed up the whole thing. So I got a new USBASP programmer to reinstall the bootloader but I get the error:
/Applications/Arduino.app/Contents/Resources/Java/hardware/tools/avr/bin/avrdude -C/Applications/Arduino.app/Contents/Resources/Java/hardware/tools/avr/etc/avrdude.conf -v -v -v -v -patmega32u4 -cusbasp -Pusb -e -Ulock:w:0x3F:m -Uefuse:w:0xcb:m -Uhfuse:w:0xd8:m -Ulfuse:w:0xff:m

avrdude done. Thank you.
I did what the error says to do but I still get the same error. I went into my terminal window and used the command: avrdude -p ATmega32U4 -c usbasp -F
it but I get another error:
avrdude -p ATmega32U4 -c usbasp -F
avrdude: error: programm enable: target doesn't answer. 1
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1

This message from AVRDude is a sort of last-effort “suggestion” that is hardly ever a correct or useful suggestion for getting anywhere on arduino and arduino-like processors…

Highly unlikely, the bootloader is protected during uploads. Besides the IDE will not allow sketches bigger than 28672 bytes for the 32U4. Your problem is most likely some other issue and you should open up a your own forum post for this.
