hello,
I designed an enclosure for a PCB, the plastic type. I've drawn using the application Autodesk inventor,
What would be the next step for a prototype?
perhaps a 3D printer?
thanks

well that's depend on your design! and your target.
if your target to made allot of devices 3d printer will cost allot, if only one device that's well work for you, anyway in both ways don't forget to export the file as 3d file for 3d printers.
check this post on my blog maybe that's what you are searching on

it will a one unit prototype to probe the behavior at heat and electromagnetic fields.
I would highly suggest making it 2.5D and just laser cutting it. It will be MUCH cheaper and a lot faster to make / prototype.
The idea is you split a 3D box into multiple 2D pieces that can be cut out of acrylic (or wood) and then glued together at joints. I've done this a lot for various projects and it both works well and IMO is better than 3D printing (unless you have access to a nice one and want to pay a lot / wait a whole day or two to get your parts). Tolerances will also be something you'd need to figure out if you have screws or a lid of some sort.
I highly recommend this tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Anything-Using-Acrylic-and-Machine-Sc/
shapeways.com is pretty economical if you don't have access to a 3D printer or laser cutter. Much higher quality as well.
Hi there,
for a first printing project or if you need special materials I would recommend choosing a online 3D printing service. One was already mentioned by chargin, you might also want to check out https://i.materialise.com for some other materials and prices. Good luck!
