Breadboard connection with 12v battery

Hello everyone, I need to make a line follower robot. I have already made the robot by powering my breadboard with a 9V battery. But in order to have more power, I am asked to power it with a 12V battery, knowing that on my breadboard I have an L293D to power my two motors and that I would like to add a potentiometer to control the voltage which I put on my breadboard. Do you have any idea of the connection made, because I tried with the same connection as the 9V battery but I failed.
Thanks in advance

A potentiometer is not a good way to set the voltage of a motor driver. Maybe it can be done with a poteniometer and a darlington emitter follower.
But question number 1 is: why???
12V is perfect for L293D...
