Breakbeam sensor

I am trying to read digital signal out of the adafruit ir sensor

IR Break Beam Sensor with Premium Wire Header Ends - 5mm LEDs : ID 2168 : $5.95 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits the

with the vellaman MOS module.

I am not allowed to use a microcontroller for this. I tried putting a 10k pull up and it still didn't work. When I tested the voltage of the the sensor( when the beam was unbroken) very small (.05v) but when the sensor was broken it went back to 0v.

Are you using some kind of power for this? How do you have it all wired up?

Then what ARE you trying to use to read this signal?

What's the not-a-logic-level mosfet for?

(edit: I see the data sheet for the module says it is logic level; the data sheet for the mosfet itself only quotes RDSon at 10V. Question remains though: what's the mosfet for?)
