Bring back the Knob

Am i the only one who gets frustrated with those up down buttons on CH controllers, and radio car tuners .

Rant tags ignored, they do not seem to have been implemented yet.

Got pulled over trying to tune my radio, accidentally hit the cruise control button and had to explain to plod why i was doing 40 on the motorway erratically.

Turned out i had turned off the aircon which is why it looked foggy.

Got to talking about knob twiddling which did not turn out well.

Perhaps it's time to hand back the driving licence

PS - I agree. Better still bring back the radios with 6 station pre-selects - 4 for MW and 2 for LW.

With an 8-track in it?

Under serious consideration.

I avoid driving in fog, night and congestion which does not leave many hours left.

Noel Edmunds is right, Britain is full.

A often have to drive various rental cars.

Too many buttons to learn.

Biggest gripe is my new ch controller which requires an octopus to programme.
My oven does an outstanding job with one rotary encoder and one button.

Use an mp3 player iso car radio?

knobs are more intuitive, read - http://www.boolpen.com/index.php/post/interaction-design-from-don-norman-to-bruce-tognazzini -

I rarely listen.
Just wanted a traffic report, turns out there is a separate button for exactly that.

You just defined a new product, a radio specialized in traffic information only.

There are FM radio chips, but I do not know if they have a traffic signal (RDS?)
that can be used to switch on/off the volume.

Its a 5 year old Honda.
Plod pointed out the 5 mm button i could barely see. Black on black.

Apparently the problem was pirates hijacked the signal to force tune to their station.

Get a more modern car.
I can change the radio station without taking my hand off the wheel in my 3.5 year old Honda. There's a control on the steering wheel (for both station and volume) and a dashboard display to tell me what station it's on and how loud it is. I don't even have to look down at the radio.
I don't use the Traffic Announcement (TA) system on it, as I prefer to listen to my local BBC radio station (London), where there are traffic reports every 30 minutes and every 15 minutes in the rush hours.
I also suspect that, in cars, protruding knobs are more dangerous than flat buttons, in the event of an accident.

I gave up a car a few years ago for financial reasons. I get on fine without it. English public transport is good Now my licence has lapsed.

And my carbon footprint is much smaller so I can look down my nose at the ...sholes in their guzzling 4x4s. I wonder if some people have a gene for "must deplete the planet in my lifetime"

is that an absolute or relative observation?

Around kensington i see the ratio of suvs to smaller seems somewhat higher than i see up my way.

I thought they were known as Chelsea tractors.

Yes.

But if you see a pair of them vying for the same parking spot its more like a roman amphiteatre.
They are another pet peeve for many reasons.

For a moment there I thought I might have to shut this thread down.

Hi,

For a moment there I thought I might have to shut this thread down. ;)

Don't know what you mean Nick! ! ! :o

In Victoria Australia, we call all suburban 4WDs, "Toorak Tractors". Toorak is where all the big knobs live. (pun intended)

Tom....

Ah, Toorak. I know what you mean.
