Broken FTDI chip?

Hello everyone

So a friend of mine wanted to build an arduinome, and seeing that the you need to flash the USB-Serial controller, it was much easier doing it on my duemilanove than his uno. So we followed these instructions to the T http://flipmu.com/work/arduinome/instructions/duemilanove-ftdi-based-arduino/ But now when I plug in the duemilanove, I get 2 solid lights on the TX and RX, No chip in either. The FT Prog returns a FT_Device_Unknown.

Looking around online, someone said that its the result of the FT232RL being dead... Any way to check this? Any hope of fixing it without replacing the chip?

Thanks in advance

That’s because a Uno doesn’t have a FTDI usb converter chip, it uses a AVR 8u2 chip that uses different firmware on the chip and a different PC software driver then the FTDI.

If it isn't responding, there probably isn't much you can do.
