Hallo everyone.
I was wondering if someone has ever tried to build an SSD acting as a cd changer for an old car hifi. I've got a 90's Suzuki with a factory radio fitted. It's designed for having a cd changer, and I'm trying to figure out how to get it up to date (i.e. capable of reading ogg/FLAC/MP3) without marring the originality of the set too much. Thank you
One option could be to use an external media player that supports the audio formats you mentioned (ogg, FLAC, MP3) and has an interface compatible with your car stereo. You could connect the media player to the auxiliary input or FM transmitter of your car stereo, allowing you to play digital audio files through the car's speakers. This way, you wouldn't have to modify the originality of the car stereo itself.
Another possibility is to explore aftermarket solutions specifically designed for older car stereos. There are companies that specialize in creating retrofit kits or adapters to modernize older car audio systems. These kits often provide options for connecting digital media devices, such as smartphones or portable music players, to your car stereo while preserving the original look and feel.
It's worth mentioning that retrofitting a car stereo or modifying its functionality may require some technical knowledge and expertise. If you're not comfortable with DIY projects, it's advisable to consult a professional car audio installer who can provide guidance and ensure a proper installation.
I wouldn't try to build something myself (and audio electronics is one of my hobbies). Making a digital audio player with good sound and a "nice" user interface, and that can decode and play multiple formats is complex. The hardware and software are both complex.
If you can figure out the analog connections (for the optional CD changer) you can connect a cell phone or tablet (headphone output) or other digital audio player. (You won't be able select tracks from the existing stereo.)
Or you could connect a Bluetooth audio receiver/board to the analog inputs.
Or a car stereo shop may have a Bluetooth adapter that's made to plug into the back of your stereo. I have a 2004 Honda with a CD changer in the dash and a car stereo shop installed a "dock" connector for my iPod classic. I can pause & skip songs from the dash (or I can switch it to the radio) but If I want to select a song or album I have to do that from the iPod. It also doesn't display the song that's playing.
