Building IR Transmitter and Receiver circuit and talking to other such circuits

Hey,

I plan to use an Arduino UNO board to build a IR transmitter and receiver circuit that would talk to other such Arduino UNO circuits.
I would want the IR transmitter to send specific codes and the IR receiver to listen to specific codes or perform different functions on the code received.
Could you please help me with providing me with the right resources to approach this project and make it work.
