I"ve not had any luck in finding buttons that will sit on top of say the the keypad on a 1602 LCD board to bring the button out through a case. It might be I don't know the exact terms to search for. I find pushbutton switches but nothing like what I'm hoping for. Others just buy switches to replace them with long shafts. I know there has to be a cleaner method. It should be a cap of some sort. Anyone have any ideas?

Seems like they would make a plastic piece that sits on top of what is already there.
Why would they?
That's the job of the device manufacturer to design and have manufactured (or manufacture themselves) the components for their design.
Because every design is unique; that kind of stuff isn't off-the-shelf (OTS), generally. What you do find that is OTS tends to be bland and uninspiring, exactly the opposite of what is needed or wanted for new devices being sold to consumers. Thus, such things tend not to exist, and are left to the manufacturer.
Time to get creative (and/or purchase a 3D printer, perhaps)...
