Cable thickness for 12v Computer Fans

Hi there,
this is my first post and I hope that this is the right place to post my question.
I want to create a extension cable for my computer fans and I have the female dupont connectors but I have no clue how thick the cable needs to be, it's a 4pin PWM cable.

If I'm allowed then it would be nice if you told me the thickness in mm^2.

Thanks

20AWG should be fine for most applications. How far do you want to extend it?

It's a small computer case, about 40-45cm.

Awesome! First post, in the right place, with the right information! Thank you! (seriously!)

For you... : )

20AWG is overkill for most fans.
Your fan should say somewhere on it how many amps it uses, which is the relvant spec for determining wire size.
Most of the fans I've seen are somewhere between 100 and 500 mA.
The see https://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm (especially the column "maximum amps for chassis wiring") To safely carry 1A, it looks like 28g wire would be sufficient, and that's pretty fine stuff. (20g wire is supposedly good for over 10A!) (I'd say "chassis wiring" means less than 1ft.)

(OTOH, I once used too fine a gauge of wire repairing my dishwasher (maybe 20g instead of 16 or 18?), and it ended up melting the insulation :frowning: )

20 AWG seems bit overkill, but honestly i don't know. I saw that the dupont can take 0.2-0.5mm^2 wires, 20-23AWG.

I googled a bit and found that the 12v fans inside a PC use 2 different cables.
0,25mm² or 0,34mm²
