Can Arduino with ethernet shield access ARM computer through ethernet cable?

Hi, I'm currently working for a sensor network project which is using a small ARM computer to collect and store data from cataloger and crossbow iris motes sensor networks. These data files can be downloaded to my laptop from ARM through a ethernet cable. So, is it possible to set a Arduino with ethernet shield to access the ARM and collect those data files whatever is stored in the ARM, then save them in a micro SD card (SD slot on the ethernet shield)? any suggestion? thanks

It takes more than a wire to transfer data. Something needs to request the data; something needs to receive the request and supply the data; something needs to receive the data and store it.

The Arduino might be able to replace the program on the PC that makes the requests and stores the response. It really depends on what that application is, and how much data is being dealt with.
