Thanks for all the tips. I have used C String as follows: char sm[6]; // if (inVal > 240) { strcpy(sm, "S9+50"); } else .. Sketch now uses 32722 it was 32696 - no change to memory.

Can I optimize this further?

I think that just stopping the use of String will you got free up a lot of ROM.
I don't recommend String.
Please try to switch to using C-string.
