Can I play audio files when the Arduino detects sound?

Hey guys,

This is my first time using Arduino and I have to use it for a uni assignment. Basically my design is meant to play different pre-recorded audio files whenever it detects a lack of sound. I think I understand the coding portion of this, but I'm just curious how I actually get the files to play as I've heard this can be quite difficult. Someone mentioned I should buy a cheap mp3 and rewire it to communicate with the Arduino, but I was wondering if there was an easier/ more effective way of doing this. Thanks in advance.

Cheers.
