I have a Arduino Uno and I'm using a 20x4 LCD display and it seems to needs more power than my USB can put out the display is very dim and flickers then on usb but on a 9v battery it's fine, can I power it with a wall wort 8vdc 500ma center pos and plug in the usb at the same time? is there anything I need to set to do this? just don't wont to blow my board up.

Yes you can have external power plugged into the Uno's external power connector and have the USB plugged in at the same time and the current will then be supplied by the external power source. However as you are having current problems with the USB with it's 500ma limit then you may still have problems using an external power wall wort that is rated also at 500ma. Best to find a wall wort rated at 1 amp.
