Can I use a 5v FTDI cable with a 3v3 arduino mini?

Hello
I've got a 3v3 arduino mini. As far as I know its the same atmega with a 3v3 regulator and a 8mhz clock.
Can I use a 5v ftdi to upload my programs?
thanks

As far as I know there is no such thing as Arduino Mini in 3.3v 8MHz version. Perhaps you have a Pro Mini. Can you post a picture of your board and the FTDI adapter?

If you connect a 3.3v pro mini to a 5v FTDI adapter, the pro mini will be running at 5v. The pro mini is fine with this and you can upload normally - but if you have things that aren't rated for use with 5v supply connected to it, they won't be so happy.

I didn't want to risk 5V with my 3.3 mini.

I adapted my FT232 as shown

Yes, is a ProMini

Board:

ProMini ATmega328P 3.3V, Compatible for Arduino Pro Mini. At board original ATmega328 chips.

Cable: Sparkfun FTDI 5V cable

Hello,

I know this thread is a bit old, but it's indexed by Google and I have the exact same question, so no point in making a new thread.

To reiterate, it's perfectly fine to connect a a 5V FTDI board to the 3v3/8MHz version of the Arduino Pro Mini?

The 5V will not fry the ATmega chip on the Arduino? I assume the TXD from the FTDI will be at 5V as well?

Regards

If you don't want to worry about it, buy this https://www.ebay.com/itm/CP2102-USB-2-0-to-TTL-UART-Module-6Pin-Serial-Converter-STC-Replace-FT232-N31/113017237930

I have one which I bought on eBay, and the TX and RX lines are 3.3V
I lucked out.

There are a few modules that have the CP2102 IC, but this particular one is the one I have.

.

There are also some CH340G based serial adapters with a switch on the board to switch between 3.3v and 5v, and with a 1x6 pin header with same pin order as the pro mini uses. The ones with the little switch (and I've gotten two designs, the black ones with male A type USB connector, and the green ones with female micro USB port) have all been good to me.
