Can I use a BPV11F instead of a TSOP382 IR receiver in this tutorial?

I'm following this tutorial: IR Communication - learn.sparkfun.com

My problem is that I have a different kind of phototransistor, the BPV11F. It's also a 3-pin but it just doesn't want to work in the same configuration. I get no readings at all on the serial monitor. Is it possible that the BPV11F cannot be used this way?

The TSOP382 has an internal filter for modulation frequency (38kHz for the most common remotes) while the BPV11F doesn't seem to have such a filter (according to the datasheet). So the answer is no.

A TSOP38238 costs less than $2 at sparkfun, so just get one.

Thank you! I suspected it had to do something with the frequency but I just couldn’t figure it out by myself based on the datasheets.
