Can NOT get iMac with El Capitan to see board

Warning: NOOB
iMac Core 2 Duo
10.11.6 El Capitan
Arduino Nano - quite possibly a clone. See here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Arduino-Nano-V3-0-CH340G-Micro-Controller-ATmega328-16M-5V-USA-Ships-Today-Kit/192480455584?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I have tried all manner of drivers, reboots, terminal commands, different cables, different ports, resets, etc. For hours. :frowning:
I keep getting the same error. The machine still does’t see the board, correct?
Looks like Terminal sees the board, but System Report does not.

avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync: resp=0x00

This is my first attempt with Arduino. I just want to add LEDs to some models. I am not a programmer, and some of the language and acronyms you might use will probably go over my head. Please be patient. I am at my wits’ end.

Thanks in advance.

needs CH340G driver

there is a discussion about this driver and Macs somewhere on this forum

.

I have tried all of these CH34x_Install_V1.4 Jan 11, 2017 CH34x_Install_V1.3 Aug 16, 2016 CH34x_Install Nov 2, 2015

Same results every time. This shows up in Terminal: /dev/tty.wchusbserial620 /dev/ttyt0 Which looks correct, however it does not show in System Info, unless this is it: USB2.0-Serial: * Product ID: 0x7523* * Vendor ID: 0x1a86* * Version: 2.63* * Location ID: 0x06200000*

That’s the only item that doesn’t have a name. The rest say Apple.

In the app, Nano is selected. It sees the same port as shown in Terminal. And it still fails. avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync: resp=0x0

USB2 port USB data cable

need both

Using the USB 2.0 ports on back of the computer (tried the ones on the keyboard as well to rule out a bad port, though everything else I have works).
The cable is the same one I use for my external HD.

Apparently instructions here https://kig.re/2014/12/31/how-to-use-arduino-nano-mini-pro-with-CH340G-on-mac-osx-yosemite.html

Use at own risk!

Edit: the problem seems to be related to Apple not allowing 3rd party drivers in os 10.10, 10.11, not sure about 10.12 or 10.13
