Can the arduino ultrasound sensor be used as an angle transducer?

My project is to detect a defect (hole) within a ~2 foot pipe. Currently I am interested in using the most common ultrasound sensor to send an ultrasound wave down one end of the pipe at an angle, which shouldn't reflect backwards towards the sensor unless there is a defect. In this way, if there is a wave that bounces back it will confirm the presence of a defect and the amplitude of the reflected wave can be used to determine the distance.

I simply want to ensure that the sensor shown in the above photo can be utilized in this manner. Thanks.

How would the hole reflect the sound wave? If you open a door and yell, can you hear the echo?

I think if it were a very big hole you might see something over a limited range.

But not a generally viable approach.
