Can we use lcd with arduino without 1k resistor or potentiometer?

I have a 16*2 lcd display:

I want to use it with arduino, but donot have 1k resistor or 10k potentiometer.
Is there any completely safe way to use the LCD with arduino without these?

Probably. Do you have a link to the specs of the display?

The 10k potentiometer is just for the contrast.

What is the 1k one for?

Yes. Just connect pin #3 (VO) to GND with plain wire i.e a 0R resistor.

The contrast will not be perfect but the 16x2 is probably readable.

I suggest that you buy some assorted resistors from Ebay.
Experiment with different values. e.g. 470R, 390R, 270R instead of the 0R.
See which gives the "best" contrast.

There is no need to buy a 10k potentiometer.
