I think a wireless router is a cost effective solution for wireless communication. I tinkered some in the past with a router (below) for the wireless communication link (router/arduino/ethernet shield on a bot communicating with a wifi adapter on my laptop). The Netgear 614 wireless router is now only $25 at the local walmart.
