Cannot connect to board in web IDE on windows XP (chrome)

Hi:

I can't connect to the device in the web IDE. I'm running winXP on a Dell xps1210 (I know, it's old). The device manager shows the Mega on COM5. I've reloaded the Create plugin after re-installing the non-web IDE and drivers, but nothing seems to work. (I tried both firefox and IE, but neither one does much of anything - I'd rather use chrome anyway).

The web IDE says "no plugin connection". The plugin is teal colored in my tray, and the version of the plugn is 1.0.46-6db09ee. Of course, I've tried pausing and restarting the plugin.
I can select the board (ATmega 2560), but I never get a selection for the port.

I have gone thru the whole procedure (successfully) on both win7 and win10, using the same board, where everything works great. But I need it to work on this laptop for installing the system (it's going into a pinball machine).

any ideas?

One more point - I can upload to the board just fine with the native IDE on the same machine.

Sort of like putting a Ferrari engine in a 30 year old LADA...it can probably be done but why on earth would you.

Have submitted a request to get this moved to the correct section too BTW.
