Cannot Run Bootloader on Arduino Mega2560 r3

I recently purchased a clone Arduino Mega2560 and it immediately would not let me upload sketches. I have a feeling it may be defective but I wanted to run the bootloader to try to troubleshoot. I'm using a clone Arduino Uno as the Programmer. Here are the steps I've followed.

  1. Connect pins as follows: Uno <-> Mega
  • D10 <-> RESET
  • D11 <-> D51
  • D12 <-> D50
  • D13 <-> D52
  • Gnd <-> Gnd
  • 5v <-> 5v
  1. Plug USB into Uno
  2. Upload ArdunioISP sketch to Uno
  3. Change board/processor to Mega 2560
  4. Change programmer to "Arduino as ISP"
  5. Run Bootloader

After doing this many time (and trying to use the ICSP pins), I get this error message:

avrdude: Yikes!  Invalid device signature.

         Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override

         this check.

avrdude done.  Thank you.

I've also attempted to use the Nick Gammon code. After the same pin connections, I run the Atmega_Board_Programmer sketch and it fails to enter programming mode. I've attached a screengrab of the serial monitor.
I really have no idea what is going wrong. I've wired and re-wired this a dozen times. Again this is a new board that I've never successfully used so maybe its just defective. Any advice or ideas will be helpful.
