Cannot save to desktop, version 1.6.9

Has anyone else had a problem saving to their desktop with Windows 10 or any other recent Windows version?
If I:
Start the IDE
File->New
File->Save As...
(Click on "Desktop")
the IDE hangs, without showing the contents of the desktop for a long time (over 30 seconds), then shows the contents of Desktop. If I click on anything in the Save As popup window, the program crashes.
After the delay, and once the contents are shown, all appears to be normal again.

Confusing, and took me a while to notice that it would eventually "catch up".

Tend to get similar when I haven't cleaned up in windows for a long time.

Also had (in the past) when libraries were a little pooched or board defs were out.
Thankfully the newer IDE tells you about those though.

Suggest a good simple clean up first. eg. CCLEANER and WISE reg cleaner just to rule out clutter.
