Cannot upload to Pro Mini

First time Arduino user here. I'm trying to upload a sketch to a Arduino Pro Mini via an FTDI Basic Breakout. I keep getting the following error message after the code compiles and attempts to upload. Any help would be great

Settings: Windows: 8.1 IDE: 1.6.1 Board: Arduino Pro or Pro Mini Processor ATmega328 (5V, 16MHz) Port: COM3

Error Message: Arduino: 1.6.1 (Windows 8.1), Board: "Arduino Pro or Pro Mini, ATmega328 (5V, 16 MHz)"

This report would have more information with "Show verbose output during compilation" enabled in File > Preferences.

Either you are writing to the wrong com port or there is a wiring fault.

Start with the FTDI unplugged and check under tools->port. Then plug it in and check that there is a new port. Use that one if it is there, if not you have a driver issue that needs fixing.

Then check the wiring.
