Yes, I am running it on VM, but I don't think that is the reason it wasn't working. It should act like a normal computer except a little bit slower.

Of course that's the reason. USB devices are available to the guest OS only if you enable it in the settings, as you've discovered. It has nothing to do with Linux Mint itself.
