Can't edit other users topic

I modified the text of the opening post to fix the code tags.

While doing so OP modified the opening post as well and saved it after my change undoing the change.

When I now try to modify it again, I can't. The three dots under the opening post change to a wrench when I click it. I expected a pencil.

I also noticed that the fat pencil next to the topic title has disappeared which is probably the root cause of above problem. Was this the system or manual intervention?

This is what happens when I click the 3 dots

This look normal to me and the "fat pencil" next to the topic title is there too

What I am seeing may be different that @sterretje due to the fact that I have moderator status but it all looks normal to me

The first post has been modified 4 times by 3 different users but that should not cause a problem

Hi @sterretje. The forum allows us to lock a post to prevent edits. We use this in cases where we see evidence that the post author is causing harm through edits, as happened here (they also unintentionally reverted my recategorization of the topic, which the forum software treats as an edit). Unfortunately a side effect of this is that it also blocks even trust level 4 users from making edits (including editing the title and recategorization in the case where the first post is locked) to the locked post.

I see that the user has already posted a reply with the corrected code, so I don't think any action is needed. If an edit is needed, just let me know and I'll take care of it.

Regards, pert

Yes, that is the reason. Staff members can still edit even when a post is locked. You can tell when a post is locked because there will be a padlock icon near the top right corner of the post. Only staff members can see that icon though.

Thanks for the explanation
