Do you have another available USB port (Back of Desktop, USB Hub etc)? If not, swap the cable out for another.
It may not be in under coma nd lpt right away. Do you see anything saying "unknown device" with a yellow exclamation point that goes away when you unplug your uno?
I am having exact the same problem. I have tried both on my own PC with Windows 7 and on my Mothers computer with XP
:~
I also, can only see (COM1)
It is really frustrating as none of the tutorials I could find comes across this problem.

Same problem. I have the unknown device when I plug in the Uno. What does that mean?
This is the procedure I use to install the Arduino drivers:
Right click the Unknown Device in Device Manager
Select Update Driver Software
Select Browse my computer for software
Click Browse button
Select the Drivers folder under the location of your Arduino software installation. (Do not select the FTDI folder inside the Drivers folder)
Click OK
Click Next
