Can't find documentation to write custom "board"

Hello, I am sorry, but I can't find the documentation to write custom board definitions for myself.

I want to write code for atmega series microcontrollers on a breadboard (atmega8, atmega16, etc) using arduino ide. If there is such document, please let me know.

Note that MCUDude has already written Arduino cores for most of the ATmega series, with many options.
