=(
I'm pretty much p____d off with this IDE., not opening. I had it about two weeks ago and now following a further Windows 8..1 update it has failed again. Last time I had to empty my computer and re-install Win 8 then Win 8.1 and all my other programs, Office, Photoshop, AutoCad amd so on and so on. It worked then until updated and then, hey ho you've guessed it, it stopped working and just hangs.
So what happens: Click the Arduino Icon; IDE starts with the usual green and white Ikon/Logo centre screen, then hangs for 60 secs and then fades from sight and posts a warning box headed: "Launch4J" stating: "An error occurred while starting the application". I totally refuse to go through rebuilding my windows 8 once more as life is just too very short. I've gone through windows recovery without gainiing any success. So: HELP !
Now come on Mr., Arduino I can't be the only guy on the planet to be undergoing this trauma. Please give us the rectifying answer just as soon as possible, or that's the end of Arduino for me and it's back to Mr.PIC. where similar scenarios never seem to happen.
O'yes just one other thing where Arduino.cc can be opened in Explorer
"https://id.arduino.cc/auth/login/?go=1&returnurl=http://forum.arduino.cc"
even though already logged in, can not be opened delivering up instead a pure white page in Explorer.
Well how are you writting on this forum you may ask..................Well I'm using Google Chrome in which, remarkably it works - if only the IDE., could be started in chrome..
NOTICE: Arduino Drivers have been updated to add support for Windows 8.1, you can download the updated IDE (version 1.0.5-r2 for Windows) from the download links below.

Hi,
Might be able to help. A short while ago I had this problem and now I suffered the same problem. HOWSOEVER I remebered this time what had I believe actually cured my problem. I read and read and read and I found lots of people were having this problem when attempting to run Arduino IDE., under Win 8. I also came across an invitation to visit Messrs Addafruit [?] who also have the Arduino IDE on offer and I noticed that this particular program was not Win xx specific so maybe it could, when downloaded run. I downloaded it & GUESS WHAT? Your dead right it works.
One problem I came across is that the program stuttered on opening and stated it couldn't find the sketchbook file and then died on me, I had changed my Sketchbook folder to drive D: so that I could get complete control of reading and writing which is something that I cannot do in Win 8\C:\Program Files. So I had to research on the net where a clean install of Arduino IDE would place the Preferences.txt file so that I could edit it so as to find my sketch location. For me this was/is:
C:\Users\HCSpreckley\Roaming\Arduino\Preferences
Then I edited this file and ammended the location of Sketchies in the top text window/box to the address where I had installed those files on D:.............................; saved the file and restarted. GUESS WHAT? Your dead right and it worked/works exactly as it should. Have I updated through the Arduino site............................GUESS WHAT? Your dead right NO absolutely NO.
Hope this helps. O' and anybody out there still trying to help me, thanks but it ain't necessary.

Hi once more forgot to say to you Java seemed to be my problem and whatever I did through the Jarva Run Time Consul had no effect. My problem was a message box from Java stating that "an error had occurred during running the program" or some such.
This problem seems to have been totally overcome by down-loading the Arduino IDE from Messrs Adafruit.
Well done messrs ADAFRUIT, God bless you, Their link for downloadis:
