Can't get Zip HALO HD to work

Just got this add-on for the micro:bit. I love how snappy you can compile and upload to the micro:bit thanks to the library by Sandeep Mistry.
But I can't get this display to work:

I also have the kirtonic GameZip 64, which runs perfectly from the Arduino IDE.
I use the NeoPixel Strandtest Wheel demo script to test it out. I set the pin number to 8 according to the documentation.
When I download a demo .HEX file from Kitronik, the LED's do light up, so battery and display seem to be OK.
What can cause this malfunctioning?
