Can't load programs to arduino uno via usb to serial port. says no com ports.

I have a 64 bit suse-linux running 11.4 I am using the ide which says it is alpha. Help shows no version. When I have a program compiled and try to load it everything seems ok until I try to pick a usb serial port. no ports are shown. I am a newbe and this is my first try at using the arduino.

Thanks. I did go through those install instructions and it did not help.
