The IDE sees the port as /dev/ttyUSB0 but I get an error opening the port when I click on serial monitor.
I've already donwloaded the sketch from my Windows machine. I just want to use this Linux tablet to watch a serial stream of data from my Pro Mini. I've had other Pro Minis connected to this tablet in the recent past, so what the error is, is getting past me.

You are not giving much information.
What tablet are you using and what version of Linux?
What error message are you getting?
What are you using to connect the pro-Mini to the tablet? If it is a regular USB cable I would expect it to appear as ttyACM0 on Linux. I get ttyUSB0 connections when I use a USB-TTL cable.
Can you use the IDE on the tablet to upload a program to the Arduino?
This laptop is running Linux Mint 19 and I have never had any problem with programming Arduinos or viewing the output from them.
