Cant uplod (avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x30)

can anyone please give me any useful pointers..
im new to arduino.. bought my first yesterday...

i think theres a problem with Port settings on my pc...
i followed the basic instructions to upload a software... the example software...

but it displays :
Binary sketch size: 1,084 bytes (of a 30,720 byte maximum)
avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x30

please help... i dont think its uploading any software to the firmware...
what do i do?

I have choosen the correct arduino under Tools >Boards > deumilanove ; and the proper IC

on the bottom right of the screen it states COM3... under Tools>serial port COM3 is the only option... :astonished:

even tried loop back test by connecting the jumper wires and running the serial monitor... all seems okay ...
but i dont think the arduino shows up in the device manager..

Sorry guys/gals.... problem solved... had to update my windows driver.... Set it to update automatically then manually updated the driver under device manager list...

Once again... a thousand apologies....
