Capacitive Touch Encoder

I was looking to add capacitive touch capability to a rotary encoder. I was thinking of using the adafruit MPR121 for touch sensing. Using a metal knob and rotary encoder with a metal shaft, would there be any concern with interfering with the function of the encoder?

The change in capacitance of an LED's PN juntion when it is turned on and off can be enough to set off a capacitance sensor if proper precautions are not taken. I believe the actuation of the encoder's switches will be similarly problematic.
