I'm trying to make a capacitive touchscreen/trackpad that can track multi-touch and be scaled up to very large sizes (4ft x 6ft). Does anyone have any possible directions to take this or hints they can give me? Any help is appreciated.

What sort of speed /resolution do you need?
In what sort of environment?

The system needs to be able to handle drawing; good enough resolution to track the fingers' movement tightly and speed enough to do it in real time.
I'm currently trying to make a small test version but, ideally, the full-sized system will be embedded into a whiteboard and will see all sorts of environments; from classrooms to hospitals to even some more grungy industrial settings. It will need to be somewhat rugged.
I do realize that the, probably, most convenient method to turn a whiteboard into a touchscreen is with the IR-based camera method (also that it's already been done many times) but I can't use that method here because of the clunkiness and setup.
Have you looked at any of the shop-window touchscreen solutions?
I've seen a few and tried to talk to the companies about how they work but I haven't been able to get any concrete info. Do you have any ideas on how that actually interfaces with the PC?
Some of the what I've seen use a "touchfilm" attached to glass that contacts a monitor but I have no idea how that actually relays information to it. If I could figure out what that touchfilm is and how it actually talks to the PC, that may be a viable solution (assuming I can actually get my hands on that touchfilm). As I said though, there's been no concrete info on that. Any ideas on how that would connect? Here's a link to the particular one I was thinking of.
