Cellular plastic or styrofoam with electronics

Hey!

I was thinking of putting my project into a box. I got a few relays so I was thinking of padding the box with cellular plastic or styrofoam to get rid of some sound.

Is that a bad idea, like am I asking for a fire hazard?
Or is it fine as long as I use electrical tape on all circuits?

Thank you in advance!

Both are capable of generating many thousands of volts of static electricity, which may kill the active electronic components in your project. Look for an organic fiber material that is sound absorbing. Or find some black ESD foam that is slightly conductive. It will absorb the sound not store static electricity.

There is slightly conductive anti-static foam and plastic.

If you do a good job insulating your electronics it might build up enough heat to cook em. be sure to get a metal heatsink through the insulated wall if vents are not going to be an option.
