Oh boy, you've probably just found my mistake.
That bit of code should have been removed! It is the code suggested by the display's datasheet (exactly as suggested by that data sheet). And I agree about the multiple statements. My code is usually pretty easy to read (when a sketch is finished I document it well before sharing - usually
