Charging and controlling Arduino UNO with iPhone?

Hey guys,

I just got my first arduino and I really dig the platform! What I want to do as my first bigger project is to control and power the Arduino with my iPhone 4 (running iOS5). I did some extensive googleing and found out that using a Serial Cable like http://makeprojects.com/Project/Connect-an-iPhone-iPad-or-iPod-touch-to-Arduino-with-the-Redpark-Serial-Cable/1130/1 I can get my iPhone to talk to my Arduino. I do however have 2 questions about this: - Isn't there a cheaper way to get serial output from my iphone? - Can't I also use the iPhone battery to power my Arduino?

Thanks! Christoph

Agreed it would be.nice to have a simple cheap setup but that's the only one i've seen. It is possible to have your phone talk to a web server and a python application relay communications over usb or xbee to arduino.

Seems to me there's a need for a handheld wireless serial console with or without an iphone in the picture.

Not sure if this works with the IPhone, but why don't you try to controll the Arduino by bluetooth? You'd need a battery for it, but the controlling would be solved :relaxed:

Chris

Even without additional hardware costs, if you are not already an iphone dev, then it will cost you $99 for a years licence. Must be a cheaper way, there are ardiuno controlling apps in the appstore, maybe worth a look.

iOS lacks the Serial-port profile required.

How much cheaper? Your phone's contract is what $75 a month? $75 * 24 = 1800. Plus the $300 for the initial phone. So $2100 later, $80 for a cool cable is too much?

I guess you could build your own cable but $30 or 40. Plus 1-2 hours of time. How much is your time worth?

I was thinking about something like this: http://resolvehax.blogspot.com/2010/10/iphone-serial-port.html or this: http://pc-mobile.net/iphone.htm I might just get one and see if this is in fact working.

Also I am already an iPhone Dev, so there are no additional €79 (yes, I know there is no such thing as a free lunch :))

If I get my iPhone to communicate with my arduino using one of the breakout boxes I might create a tutorial or so.

Thanks for your input guys! Christoph
